Updated Journal Aims and Scope

Following some excellent feedback and comments at our most recent BES Editor’s Strategy Day (see photo below), we have updated the wording of our journal scope. The updated scope reads: Journal of Ecology publishes original articles on all aspects of the ecology of plants (including algae), in both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. We will publish…

The story behind COMPADRE – Population Demographics Database

In the next Journal of Ecology podcast I interview a number of ecologists responsible for two databases of population demographics matrices (ComADRe and ComPADRe III), one for  plants and other for animals. Four ecologists were interviewed: Rob Salguero-Gomez (who currently organizes the databases), Hal Caswell (a collaborator on the project), and Miguel Franco and Jonathan Silvertown (who started these databases a few…

Interview with Lauren Urgenson

In the next Journal of Ecology podcast I interview Lauren Urgensonabout her paper showing that an invasive plant species (Polygonum X bohemicum; bohemian knotweed) has different effects on plants of different seral stages. Check out the paper in the journal here.  This interview took place at ESA 2012 in Portland, OR. As always let us know what you…

Interview with Andrea Stephens – resource concentration by insects and effects on plants

A paper issue 100:4  in the Journal (Resource concentration by insects and implications for plant populations) by Andrea Stephens and Judith Myers explores how resource concentration by insects effects plants, using both modeling and empirical approaches. Read the abstract here. I caught up with Andrea a few weeks ago to do a video interview. Subscribe to our YouTube posts…

Interview with Ellen Damschen

A paper in Early View in the Journal (Endemic plant communities on special soils: early victims or hardy survivors of climate change?) by Ellen Damschen and colleagues explores the consequences of climate change for plants on serpentine soil communities. Read the abstract here. I caught up with Ellen to do a video interview. Subscribe to our YouTube…

Interplay between timing, size, and sex

Ishii and Harder have an accepted paper in the Journal titled “Phenological associations of within- and among-plant variation in gender with floral morphology and integration in protandrous Delphinium glaucum“.  Read the paper here. The authors have provided a short synopsis of the paper and two photos of their study species, Delphinium glaucum.

Inferring community assembly mechanisms

Marko Spasojevic and Katharine Suding have a paper in Early View in the Journal titled “Inferring community assembly mechanisms from functional diversity patterns: the importance of multiple assembly processes“.  Read it here.  We posted an interview with Marko here. Marko has provided a short synopsis of the paper and a photo of the study site. Enjoy.
